‘Tis the season to show your appreciation, and fitting right in with the holiday season is National Roof Over Your Head Day. It’s a national day to recognize the things you have in your life including the roof over your head. You can use this time to show your appreciation for the roof over your head in a literal sense; check your roof before this winter season is in full force. A couple of things to look for that can save you a headache or two in the future would be:
- Clutter in your gutter. Make sure your gutters are clean, so when the snow melts throughout the season it doesn’t collect and make an ice dam. When snow falls to the edge of your roof you can carefully rake it off, but be careful not to damage cold and brittle shingles. Also, be cautious of ice built up under the snow, so it does not fall on yourself or others around you.
- Check the roof for wear and tear. The winter season takes a great toll on your roof and making sure the roof is able to handle the weight of snow and ice can save you from having to replace your roof in the middle of winter, which can be a timely and costly job.
While it may seem like it’s too late to be looking into roofing updates, if you find a problem you’ll be thankful you did.
